Sonic Cathedral, 2009

Jason: This is your first time touring solo [without Nightwish] in the United States. What made you decide to come out here finally?

Tarja: You know this is my third try I think already (*laughs*) to come here so I’m actually really, really happy it finally came true. My wishes were fulfilled. You know I have lots of followers here in the United States and they have been supporting me a lot in my solo career as well as in my previous career with Nightwish. So it has been really marvelous to get their support and now it’s very important for me to give my best for them. Back to them somehow. This gratitude that I have.

Jason: Speaking of Nightwish. You were let go in a very bad public way. It’s been a few years since the letter and you seem much happier now. How have things been for you after going through that experience?

Tarja: Well many things have changed. Actually the whole career as a solo artist is radically different than being a member of a band. I mean everything is different. The whole organization around me. I have to be deciding more things on my own. I mean there is so many things. Also the responsibility that I’m carrying on my own is of course very different than before. But the thing is that I have learned so many things. Every day is such a different day and I’m also writing songs on my own today so I’m really happy to be able to do that. To have that sort of freedom to explore what is inside of my soul and my heart. Then let people hear that. What’s really there. That has been a really beautiful thing.

Jason: So you’re doing a lot more writing. What is it like to be more involved in that process rather than just being the singer?

Tarja: Of course it gets more personal. That’s what it all is. I mean it gets really personal and you know it’s just very rewarding. I have to be so honest with the music today that’s because I believe in that. I don’t know if this is a very naive thought in a way but I believe if you are honest with the music then people can reach the message easier and the music touches them. I mean music is the emotion for me and that’s all about it. I want to deliver emotions for the audience. For the listeners. That is it. That’s the beauty in it. It’s so lovely to be a musician. It’s a privilege today to be an artist.

Jason: You have a second album you have been working on called What Lies Beneath.

Tarja: Yes.

Jason: How has that been coming along and when can we expect it?

Tarja: Well I have quite many songs already (*laughs*). Actually I wrote around 20 songs already which are not all going to be the album of course (*laughs*). Otherwise I need to make a double album again (*laughs*). But I mean that there are lots of good songs. Kind of a same continuance process from My Winter Storm to the next one but the radical difference is the variety of songs that will be offered but more or less radical with the heavier guitars and with overall heavier songs. Then also some moody sounds...So I still want to keep on the same line but make a radical difference to the songs even more than My Winter Storm.

Jason: So you’re going to stay in the heavy metal genre for this one?

Tarja: Yeah of course. Of course. Come on (*laughs*). It’s part of me. But you know part of me (*laughs*).

Jason: Yeah. Because you also did a Christmas album.

Tarja: Yes.

Jason: Which is a completely different style.

Tarja: It’s a side project. Yeah.

Jason: Have you thought about doing anything more in that style?

Tarja: Classical music. I think that I will still continue making classical music of course. Hopefully able to do a classical album or something like that as a side project again. But nothing concrete has been planned yet. I have been planning some tours with one tenor and doing classical music concerts is definitely again some Christmas concerts in the end of this year in Finland. It’s a tradition there. But you know classical music definitely is very important for me.

Jason: With touring you’re doing these shows in the United States right now. Where do you go from there?

Tarja: United States. Canada. Montreal. Toronto. Then to South America. Mexico and Venezuela. Four concerts in my hometown Buenos Aires, Argentina. That’s about it.

Jason: And then.

Tarja: Then back to Finland (*laughs*). Some summer festivals during the summer in Europe. I’m have planned to do quite many festivals. On the other hand also some club shows of my own. Then again the storm hits through Europe for the last time before my next album recordings in the end of this year. So there will be still one more European tour.

Jason: You’re one of the largest names in the female metal scene. Last year you headlined the Metal Female Voices Festival. How was that experience?

Tarja: Very nice. I mean I’m so honored to be there among all the other girls and ladies in metal. It has been amazing to follow how many female fronted bands exist today. There are lots of them. When I started my career with Nightwish there were not many of us (*laughs*). It was very exciting to be able to do what I did and then to explore what is there to come. Now when I see all these bands around me I am like “wow, where are all these coming from” “what has happened” and it’s wonderful. It’s a really cool thing.

Jason: I understand you’re going to come back again this year?

Tarja: Come back as what? (*laughs*)

Jason: To headline the Metal Female Voices Festival in Belgium...

Tarja: Yeah. Sure.

Jason: How did that come about?

Tarja: Well the promoters are very, very friendly people. They are actually friends and they wanted me to be part of the festival again. I’m really honored. It will be a big pleasure to do that festival again...Luckily we had our tour planned around the festival so it was easier because it’s not easy for me to organize the tours and have all the band present. As session musicians they have their own business going on. They have many artists they’re playing with so it’s not easy to match everybody’s schedule together to be all available. This time we were lucky.

Jason: You’ll get to play with a lot more female bands again.

Tarja: Yeah.

Jason: Since you were one of the first female vocalists to do metal, people always said “she has the voice, she’s the voice”. Now there are many bands that emulate your work and look up to you. How does it feel to have many people use your work as their inspiration?

Tarja: I’ve been lucky to be able to talk to many girls that as well they see me as kind of their idol. Which is for me really something I’m really honored to be able to be in that position. It is really real (*laughs*) because for me it’s like “how’d that happen” (*laughs*). I mean where and when. I have just worked so hard for the voice I have... I have been working so hard. I’m still doing it every day. Rehearsing a lot. Working a lot. It’s like two steps ahead. Three backwards. Two steps ahead, three backwards (*laughs*). It’s really a stony road. You have to keep those stones away from your road and be patient with the voice because it’s an instrument that you’re carrying in yourself. You have to take care of it. So I’m very honored to be able to see that these girls really look up for me and see me as that. As their role model. Well thank you (*laughs*). What can I say.

Jason: Your fans as well. You have a really good connection with your fans.

Tarja: That’s very important.

Jason: You’ve done contests where your fans can win phone calls from you and other such things. What has it been like to bond with them?

Tarja: Well the truth is. The reality where I’m living is that without them there wouldn’t be me as an artist. That’s the basic thing that keeps my feet on the ground. I mean I love my fans. This thing is such a bond between me and them. I call them my winter storm as my first album. So they are definitely a whole lot to me.

Jason: Recently you have taken up playing instruments and doing other things.

Tarja: Trying to at least (*laughs*).

Jason: Trying to.

Tarja: Yeah. Trying to (*laughs*).

Jason: You are playing keyboards in concert now. How long have you been interested in playing music as well as singing?

Tarja: Well I started playing... I started with piano when I was five years old. So my parents wished me to take private piano lessons and that was it. I started playing early so I’ve been studying piano 15 years at least. Classical piano. Until the university. I’m still doing some exams in university. As well as church organ & Flute. Those are the main instruments sort of. I play a bit of a guitar but very badly... But in a way that I survive. I mean if I need to try some riffing in my songwriting process I can hardly ever hit the correct notes (*laughs*) but at least I hear what it should go like this in a guitar for example. Piano is definitely the strongest instrument of mine.

Jason: Can we expect to continue seeing you play keyboards in concert?

Tarja: Yeah. For sure. Definitely.

Jason: When it comes to Nightwish I know it was rough the way you were let go. Now that a couple of years have passed how would you feel if they approached you about a reunion?

Tarja: I think at the moment the feeling is I see it very hard. I see that it’s not really possible to happen. I mean things were really bad how it ended. It was so bad. I think that no matter what so many things should really change. I’m so happy on my own today as a singer so I just want to see what is there for me in my future as a singer and as a songwriter if I can call myself that. So I don’t see it coming but I am not closing doors either.

Jason: On your own you seem much happier as a person.

Tarja: Yeah. I’m really happy. So happy. Because you know how is it. I can choose the people to work with. I have this amazing freedom around me and inside me that I have really understood what it is to be happy. What it is to be healthy. What it is to enjoy all the days you have. Because you never know when all is going to be taken away. You see some sad stories time to time. All the time here those things. You have to live when you have a chance to live and you have to love when you have a chance to love. That’s what I have understood that no matter how bad the things are out there, there is always a door where there is a light coming towards you.

Jason: So no matter what we will hear much more of you in the future?

Tarja: I hope so (*laughs*). I hope.

Jason: What would you like to see in that future?

Tarja: Wow. Next couple of years. I would like to go to Tahiti to dive (*laughs*) instead of music. Forget the music now (*laughs*). I would like to go scuba dive to Tahiti. That’s my dream. It’s far away. Anyway and then I would love to maybe. Tick tock, tick tock. Think about a family. Maybe in a few years time. If we have a sort of balance already in our life at that time (*laughs*) because there isn’t anything like that at the moment (*laughs*). But you know some sort of calming down even though the new album and the touring and all that will still be happening in two years time. In a way looking for the future always.

Jason: What about teaching?

Tarja: Teaching. Yeah, definitely. That is something that I wish to do and that is something that I’m also wishing to have more time for it. I mean I’m teaching in Buenos Aires in my home in Argentina. There are many people requesting to have lessons from me and I’m really wishing that I can take the time to give all those people to make it happen.

Jason: What do you have to say to your U.S. fans that you will see starting tomorrow night?

Tarja: Gee. I’m nervous (*laughs*). It’s New York, New York. New York (*singing*). I mean come on. It’s my first time here. I’m so excited about it. I really want to thank you all for making this happen. I’m so grateful and I love you. See you tomorrow. See you soon.

Jason: I think they feel the same way.

Tarja: Thank you for the interview opportunity with Sonic Cathedral (*laughs*).

xD xD

Oh wow theres loads. Thanks Amy Smile

I need to go look on MetalFromFinland. Ok found a recent one

TARJA TURUNEN has been interviewed by Finnish magazine Ilkka. The article follows below (credit for English translation goes to Orion).

I'm not afraid what other people think anymore, says Tarja Turunen who's working on her second solo album.
The beginning of the week in Kuusankoski has been bit rainy, but the sun is shining for Tarja Turunen. The singer is at home, and doesn't try to hide her good mood.

- Yesterday I emptied the sewer and cleaned the roof. Now my muscels are sore, she says and stretches her arms.
The illusion of informality would be normal, unless she wasn't wearing a make up. Turunen wanted her make up artist from Helsinki to fix her for the photo shoot.

Turunen has no problem for work in the yard. According to her, it brings some variety for everyday life. Though it lasts only about a week, because soon she's going to do some gigs again.
Three years ago the feeling was totally different. Only a year had passed singe she left Nightwish, and the start of her solo career was followed through a magnifying glass. Some were willing to bet that the career of the former front woman of a band was turned downwards.
Now Turunen can say that the doubting ones were wrong. The solo deput My Winter Storm has sold gold in many European countries, and the concert calender doesn't look too bad either.

Turunen admits that pressusres before the first solo album were huge.Partly because she had never wrote music or lyrics before.
-Working with the professional songwriters made me really nervous at first. I was embarrased to tell my own ideas, because I didn't know how they would take them. I was worried about being squelched. But my thoughts were taken openly anyway. The biggest challenge was to make sure for the work group, what kind of music I wanna do, she says.

What she wanted didn't appear on My Winter Storm yet. The album came out two years after Turunen leaving Nightwish, winter 2007. The album was said to be promising, but was critisized mainly because the lack of its own message.
Turunen has read the criticism. On the next album the artist take herself a bigger role. There's not gonna be any cover songs or complitely requested songs.
-It doesn't have a single song that I didn't wrote some lyrics for. or co-composed them, Turunen says.

The name What Lies Beneath crystallizes its themes.
-I wanna talk about things I've seen when toured around the world and lived in between two cultures. People go through same problems and things no matter what part of the world they live in. This is what I wanna tell the others. It's gonna be also very personal album, it has a strong presence of my passion and love.
That's a big promise. What Lies Beneath must show how much Tarja's person has depth for making interesting music.
The singer refuses to take pressures. Even though there is more of her own person, Turunen feels lightweighted than when making My Winter Storm.
-It's been nice to write songs and see that I really got what it takes. I'm not afraid what other people think. I feel I'm on the right track, when the music gives myself a good feeling. I can't make music that pleases everybody.

Style of the album will be mystical, heavy metal meets classical movie music like the previous one. It's gonna be little bit rougher though.
-My Winter Storm guitarsound lacks some edge. Now we have paid more attention to it.
Tarja Turunen wishes she can enter the studio in February.
-I have 20 songs made by myself or with other musicians. The challenge is to bring life to the songs. I work melodies mostly with the piano, but I also use my voice a lot for composing.

She hasn't have much time for working with the songs. Tarja says the longest time she has standed still this year is three weeks. That time she spended in her home in Argentina at spring. She lives with her husband Marcelo Cabuli in an apartment house in downtown Buenos Aires.
-At this time it's impossible to make plans further than a year ahead. We've planned to have kids in some point. Being a mother is such a big thing, that I might regret later not experiencing it

Marcelo Cabuli who works as his wife's manager, is responsible of all of her contacts with media, among other things. According to Turunen, her husband can let go of his work even less than she does.
-Marcelo is married to his work. He's got his laptop with him everywhere. Our friends say that we must be little bit crazy to be able to live a life like this. Luckily we have so many positive things around us, that we can make it, Turunen says.

Standing still is very difficult, even when she's got time for that.
-I need something to do all the time, otherwise I might start painting walls or something, she laughs.
Tarja Turunen did the only gig in Finland this summer in Vaasa this Saturday (July 18). After that she continues her summer tour in Central Europe. In September-October she's got another one, nearly 20 gig tour in Europe. At the end of the year Turunen is planning Christmas concerts in Finland.
-Thank god I have more work tham I'm able to do. It could be the opposite too. Last week I got to know that my album has sold gold in Germany too, she says.

-I'm gonna be asked about the Nightwish days probably for the rest of my life. It doesn't bother me, because Nightwish is part of my history. Of course I also have fans who first found my solo album, and after that they learned about my past in a band.

WHO?

Tarja Turunen, 31, was a vocalist in Nightwish for 9 years (1996-2005).
An Argentinean husband Marcelo Cabuli leads a record company, concentrating on metal music.
The couple moved to their Finland home in Kuusankoski, Kymeenlaakso five years ago. Their second home is in Argentina, where the couple spend teh biggest part of year.
Besides rock festivals, Tarja Turunen also makes classical concerts. For example this year she's going to 'Soi suvessa'-festival.
My Winter Storm has sold platinium in Finland.

Post by KellieBent Sun Sep 27, 2009 1:59 am

Rockpages.gr: I would like to start from your summer European Tour that comes to an end. Are you happy with the crowd’s reaction so far?

Tarja Turunen: I am so happy with it…I visited for the first time countries that I have never been before like Croatia and Serbia. Everybody in the band is putting everything the have in the show and the fans know it. So yes…I am happy! I can’t complain (laughs)!

Rockpages.gr: In a Tarja Turunen concert one can tell the dynamic of a show by the fans’ attendance number. In a festival, can you really distinguish if the people have come there for you or they just happen to be there?

Tarja Turunen: Actually, it was the first time that I did a festival tour and I was kind of worried about various things like for instance how the crowd will react, how good the production will be…stuff like that. Luckily, everything turned out great! People seem to accept my new career as a solo artist. All in all, the people in festivals –at least the ones that I was part of- were appreciative towards all the bands of the bill. It was a good atmosphere. It’s something new to me…I am trying to establish myself…with this new beginning and…so far so good!

Rockpages.gr: In the beginning of 2009, you announced the title of your new album (“What Lies Beneath”) but it will be released sometime into 2010. Wasn’t it a little bit premature? Will there be a single or an EP before it?

Tarja Turunen: No...I think that it is the best time to have the album ready by the beginning of 2010. I am not sure if there is going to be an EP before the album…that’s something that has to do with the record company. I really hope to be in the studio in February and start pre-production on the album. I want to have the album out before or after the World Cup in the summer (laughs)! If I would have released it by the start of the World Cup nobody would pay attention to the music…everybody would watch the games.

Rockpages.gr: So, is football above the music?

Tarja: Yeah! (laughs) September will probably be a good month for the record…

Rockpages.gr: Let’s talk about the album…how different it will be in comparison with “My Winter Storm”. What new elements should we expect from it?

Tarja Turunen: We haven’t started writing yet, but I guess that the new album would be more powerful, more aggressive…more metal in general. This would be my second studio album and I have already the experience of the debut…the fans know what to expect and they know that I will deliver something personal and in the same time something that will be varied from my past effort. I am not satisfied with repeating the atmosphere of any of my past albums. So, I guess that they will be new elements in there but right now it’s too early to say. But, I am pretty sure that it will also be a natural follow-up to “My Winter Storm”.

Rockpages.gr: Do you think that now, after two years since its release, “My Winter Storm” had stood the test of time?

Tarja Turunen: Of course…the reaction has been great and all the reviews were positive. I was very happy with the result and even happier with the fact that the fans have embraced the new material. The tour that we did was also very successful so...yes...I think that the album stands the test of time.

Rockpages.gr: Last year, you released a really interesting EP called “The Seer”. How did the collaboration with Doro come up?

Tarja Turunen: Actually, it was the Doro management that conducted me about the possibility of doing a duet with her. Of course, I agreed and we did the song “Walking With The Angels” that is included in Doro’s new album. So I said, we should do something that will be on an album of mine (laughs)! The funny thing is that we didn’t meet for the recording of the song…It was one of the best collaborations and I strongly believe that Doro is one of the finest female vocalists…but I guess everybody knows that!

Rockpages.gr: Your touring and studio band features top class musicians. Will you have them also for the upcoming Fall Tour and the new album?

Tarja Turunen: Of course…at least, I hope so…that’s the plan. As you know, the musicians that I work with are really professional and that is a fact that makes me really happy. But, if their schedules would work with mine then…yes, we will work together in the studio, too. And, of course, I would love to have them on tour with me…people know their faces and acknowledge their abilities…I couldn’t ask for something more!

Rockpages.gr: The last time that we talked, you had said to me that you’d probably see yourself in 15 years singing Opera. Do you think that maybe this time approaches?

Tarja Turunen: Well I hope so…you know…I hope that in the future my voice would be even stronger. We will see…for the time being I focus on my career as a solo artist and if the conditions are right in the future…and if I am lucky then…who knows? Maybe, I will do Opera, too.

Rockpages.gr: Do you think that the opera audience will welcome a singer that made a name from the metal scene?

Tarja Turunen: They have done it already! I have done Opera in Finland and people were really positive…they didn’t pay attention to the fact that I am the singer of a metal band. After all, they don’t expect to hear metal songs in the Opera…they wanna hear a good and powerful voice. Let me tell you something…the Opera audience shares one thing in common with the metal audience: the love for music! As I say…I am not a fan of metal music, I am a fan of music…simple as that! It’s a beautiful thing that I have already managed to do both Opera and metal. I love them both, you know.

Rockpages.gr: You are a citizen of two countries. What are really the differences between the Finnish and the Argentinean crowd?

Tarja Turunen: The Latin American fans are crazy and hot blooded…like the Greek audience! The Finnish fans tend to be more reserved…this is the case, also, with the European fans…at least in most of the countries. They seem to like the music but they don’t go crazy like the Argentinean –for example- crowd. The both love the music but they express it in a different kind of way. This is the best thing…people express their love to you in so many different ways. They perfectly know that I always do the best for them.

Rockpages.gr: One of the ways that the artist promotes his or her career is the merchandise. Do you ever think yourself as a Mego doll, an action figure or a character in a video game?

Tarja Turunen: (laughs) I guess that the fans would love to have the Tarja doll…there are fans that make stuff for me…dolls, figures, they draw pictures of myself…some of them are really good. I am not against this kind of merchandise…I mean, if the music is good then all the other stuff is supplemental. The one thing that must remain consistent is the music…but…if, I can see myself as a doll…(laughs) I really don’t know!

Rockpages.gr: I probably know the answer to that last question, but our readers want to hear it straight from you…the last Nightwish Tour got negative reviews from the worldwide music press. Maybe, there is something in the horizon…?

Tarja Turunen: Are there such rumors in Greece…(laughs)…me and Nightwish…? Noooo…of course, not!

Rockpages.gr: I was sure but I wanted to hear it straight from you…

Tarja Turunen: No, there are just rumors. There is no truth in that.

Come to Brum and we'll show you crazy fans Tarja! I was kind of hoping for a more opera album to be honest. But I'm sure it'll be an amazing album. I just hope one day we'll get a nice opera album.
